The Genoa Biosphere , located in the charming old port area just steps from the Aquarium, is an iconic spherical glass and steel structure designed by architect Renzo Piano. With a diameter of 20 meters and weighing approximately 60 tons, this "bubble" encloses a small but lush corner of rainforest, offering a unique immersive experience.
Inside the Biosphere, a complex computerized system constantly monitors temperature and humidity to recreate the typical climate of tropical forests. This allows it to host and protect over 150 species of animals and plants, showcasing the beauty and fragility of these ecosystems.
Strolling through the lush vegetation, you'll be able to admire a wide variety of tropical plants up close. Among these, the large tree ferns, which can reach seven meters in height, stand out. You'll also have the opportunity to discover the plants used to produce everyday products such as chewing gum, coffee, vanilla, tamarind, and cinnamon, as well as bananas and other exotic fruits.
The Biosphere is populated by numerous animal species living freely. You'll be able to observe colorful birds such as the scarlet ibis, zebra finch, and the rare weaverbird flying freely overhead. Butterflies, iguanas, turtles, fish, and insects also hide among the foliage, creating a vibrant environment full of surprises.
