Discovering Italian Labyrinths: A Journey Through Nature, Art and Mystery

While waiting for the warm season, we propose an original itinerary to discover the suggestive labyrinth gardens scattered around Italy, perfect for a day trip with the children, in the name of adventure and fun.

Emilia Romagna: The Masone Labyrinth, the Largest in the World

Let's start with the Masone Labyrinth, located in Fontanellato, in the province of Parma. With over 200 bamboo plants ranging from 30 centimeters to 15 meters tall, this is the largest labyrinth in the world. A magical place where you can "get lost" to reflect, wander, and fantasize about experiencing an adventure along the 3 km-plus path! The labyrinth, commissioned by Franco Maria Ricci and opened to the public in 2015, also houses a museum complex and a prestigious restaurant. It is accessible to four-legged friends and has no architectural barriers, making it easily accessible with strollers and wheelchairs. www.labirintodifrancomariaricci.it

Veneto: A Journey Through Labyrinths, Villas and Flight Museums

Veneto is a region particularly rich in gardens and labyrinths, evidence of a strong landscape culture. Among the destinations not to be missed, we point out:

  • Island of San Giorgio Maggiore (Venice): Inside the Giorgio Cini Onlus Foundation, there is an evocative labyrinth created in the 17th century in honor of the Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges, who considered Venice a labyrinth of alleys and canals.
  • Castle of San Pelagio (Padua): This castle boasts two labyrinths: the Minotaur and the mirror labyrinth. In the first, the goal is to reach the Minotaur, located in the center of the labyrinth, overcoming trials and distractions. In the second, it is a one-way labyrinth, with no dead ends. Inside the Castle complex, there is also the Museum of Flight. www.castellosanpelagio.it
  • Villa Pisani (Brenta Riviera, Padua): Considered the "Queen of the Venetian villas", Villa Pisani hosts a splendid labyrinth made with box hedges. www.villapisani.beniculturali.it

Piedmont: The Panoramic Labyrinth of Masino Castle

In Piedmont, in Caravino, the labyrinth located inside the Masino Castle and Park is worth a visit, offering an exceptional panoramic view of the valley between Ivrea and Vercelli. This hedge maze, among the largest in Italy, was purchased and restored by the FAI to open it to the public. After walking through the labyrinth, you can visit the Castle (very well preserved) and the Carriage Museum, while the children will have fun in the Garden of the Elves.

Tuscany: The Labyrinthine Interweavings of the Petraia Gardens

Finally, in Tuscany, we recommend visiting the Petraia Gardens, located in the Castello district of Florence. This complex of labyrinthine gardens, lawns, and gardens with centuries-old trees has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission is free. www.piccoligrandimusei.it
